Respect in the Learning Environment
Université de Saint-Boniface (USB) is committed to providing a respectful, professional, diverse and inclusive environment for its community, which includes many racialized newcomers enrolled in the Cours de langue pour immigrants au Canada (CLIC) program.
Discrimination, disrespectful behavior, harassment, bullying or acts of reprisal, by or towards staff, teachers and students, will not be tolerated. USB’s Respectful Workplace and Learning Environment Policy applies to both virtual and in-person settings.
We encourage you to promptly bring forward any concerns, comments or questions with regards to these policies, by contacting clic [at] ustboniface.ca (clic[at]ustboniface[dot]ca), and we will address them in a confidential manner as soon as possible.
Use of Personal Electronic Devices in Class
In order to create a comfortable and respectful online learning environment for all, we ask that you:
- Not share the Zoom meeting information with anyone else;
- Keep your camera on at all times;
- Not take any pictures or make any video or audio recordings of the class. This ensures privacy for all participants;
- Maintain respectful dialogue with others in the Zoom chat box.
In order to create a comfortable and respectful in-person learning environment for all, we ask that you:
- Only use your personal electronic devices such as cell phones, iPads or other tablets, and laptops etc., during the allotted break times, before class and after class. The use of these electronic devices, for academic purposes, during class time is at the discretion of the instructors;
- Not take any pictures or make any video or audio recordings of the class. This ensures privacy for all participants.
Failing to comply with these policies can result in being withdrawn from the program.
CLIC Attendance Policy
Accepting a spot in a CLIC class means that you agree to follow the attendance policies, which are put in place to ensure that USB respects its obligations towards IRCC as the funder and that you get the most out of your French language training.
Attendance at every class is mandatory.
We do understand, however, that unforeseen circumstances may occur. If you have to miss a class, be late for a class or leave a class early, you must send an email to clic [at] ustboniface.ca (clic[at]ustboniface[dot]ca) AND your teacher that includes:
- Your first and last name(s)
- Your level (ex. NCLC 1)
- Your teacher’s name
- When you attend classes (ex. Tuesday evenings)
- The reason for your absence, late arrival or early departure
If you miss more than 20% of class time in a month, you may be withdrawn from the program. IRCC requires that all students attend at least 80% of class time each month. This policy applies even if you have informed clic [at] ustboniface.ca (clic[at]ustboniface[dot]ca) of your absences.
It is very important to arrive promptly to class, so as not to interrupt the learning process for yourself or others. If a student arrives 5 or more minutes late, it will count as a late arrival. 3 late arrivals is equal to a 0.5 absence (ie. it counts as being absent for half a class).
If you miss 3 or more classes during a session without informing clic [at] ustboniface.ca (clic[at]ustboniface[dot]ca), you may also be withdrawn from the program.
If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to keep up with course content. Teachers are not expected to provide catch-up instruction for missed lessons. If you miss an evaluation task, you will be marked as absent. The teacher does not need to provide a make-up task. If you feel comfortable, you may consider connecting with a classmate and agreeing to share notes or materials when one of you is absent.
For those attending online, please note that being present in class means having your camera turned on. Unless special arrangements have been made in advance with the CLIC Program Coordinator, if your camera is turned off and you are not participating in class, you will be marked as absent.
If you require special accommodations for your learning, please contact clic [at] ustboniface.ca (clic[at]ustboniface[dot]ca) to discuss your needs and what options are available.
