Université de Saint-Boniface invites employers to play an active role in the professional development of students enrolled in its 2-year diploma programs at École technique et professionnelle, including Business Administration, Multimedia Communications, Information Technology and Tourism.
Through workplace training opportunities, employers can contribute to students’ success while benefiting from their skills and enthusiasm.
Programs
The purpose of the program is to provide students with comprehensive training in business administration, including accounting, managament, marketing, finance, entrepreneurship, and computer applications.
Examples of tasks asked of the student are:
- Administrative support and general office work
- Data entry
- Contributing to special projects
- Hospitality or receptionist functions
- Contributing to drafting of forms; correcting, printing, copying
- Filing; examining records, finding records, building a case file
- Perform analysis for new project planning and contracts
Human Resources
- Create computerized employee documents and reports
- Update employee documents (diploma, cover letter, resume)
- Make arrangements to announce or post vacancies
- Make arrangements for internal and external training activities
- Help select and evaluate candidates and check references
- Determine positions needing to be filled immediately or if possible
- Support human resource planning activities
- Contact selected candidates to schedule an interview
Accounting
- Contributing to the preparation of financial statements
- Receiving and sorting of incoming invoices

This two-year Tourism Management Diploma program is designed to prepare the student for a wide range of positions in the tourism industry, either locally or internationally. Through a combination of classroom work and industry-related work experience, students will develop a number of important skills, including those relating to customer service, planning, research, marketing, and entrepreneurial initiative. In the second year, students participate in a five-week workplace practicum. Co-operative work experience placements are available to qualifying students after the second year.
USB's technical college offers two options for studies in multimedia communications: a regular 2-year diploma as well as a 3-year concentration in business administration.
Diploma in Multimedia Communications
Multimedia Communication is a two-year program for anyone who wants to pursue a career in multimedia management and production. The program offers a range of professional skills in a wide range of areas related to multimedia creation:

Multimedia Communications Diploma with Concentration in Business Administration
The Multimedia Communications Diploma with a Concentration in Business Administration is a three-year program for anyone who wants to pursue a career in multimedia management and production while acquiring business skills, including marketing. The program offers a range of professional skills in a wide range of areas related to business and multimedia creation: graphic design.

The purpose of this program is to train students in designing, installing and maintaining information systems. Students who successfully complete the program will have the technical knowledge to implement and fix hardware components, connect and maintain business applications, store and maintain databases adn implement interfaces between vairous information systems. The program also includes related business courses.
Students will get the chance to learn these skills within a modern laboratory setting. Practical approaches ensure that students learn by experience. An excellent student-professor ratio enables constant communication between professors and students. This ratio maximizes learning and makes for a healthy learning environment.
The program uses the latest technology. Course titles represent the type of knowledge learned and not the product used. The program may then stay up to date as far as the technology used within the courses without having to rename courses every year. It provides for maximum flexibility to all involved.
The program looks to provide a healthy balance between the various flavours of products on the marketplace. Products from Microsoft, Accpac, Adobe, Macromedi, Cisco, Novell and Open Sou community among others are used in the program. Students will get a feel for the various options available within the workplace. Constant communication between the program and the community ensures that the courses reflect the use of technology within the local marketplace.

Learning Objectives
The purpose of integrating the regular practicum and co-operative work placement into a program is to enable students to further their classroom learning in a work environment while adapting to the requirements of the job market. The work experience students acquire during their work placement enriches their learning in the program.
Practical experience in the labour market enables students to:
- Develop and strengthen qualities sought after in today's job market;
- Understand employer expectations while maintaining professonalism;
- Explore the selected job field.
Types of Practicum
The Regular Practicum is unpaid and is compulsory for students at the end of their second year of study.
For the Business Administration, Tourism Management, and Multimedia Communications programs, the practicum lasts 5 weeks and normally extends from the beginning of May to the first week of June.
For the Information Technology program, the practicum lasts 9 weeks and normally takes place from the beginning of May on to the end of June.
The Co-op Work Placement lasts 16 weeks. The student is paid by the employer and it is done at the end of the second year of study. To participate in the co-op work placement, students must submit a written application and meet certain selection criteria largely based on academic performance and skills.
This practicum normally extends from the beginning of May to approximately the third week of August.
Roles and Responsibilities
The practicum program uses a collaborative approach. The students, the practicum coordinator, the practicum supervisor, and the employer all have responsibilities in order to ensure that all goes smoothly.
Employer Responsibilities
As a partner in the education of our interns, here are the employer's responsibilities in order to ensure a mutually beneficial outcome for interns and employers.
Before the Internship
- Establish measurable objectives for the interns;
- Identify a mentor who will be responsible for supervising and evaluating the students
- Plan and supply the resources necessary for the students to successfully complete their tasks during the internship.
During the Internship
- Maintain student supervision;
- Gradually increase internship responsibilities according to the student's ability;
- Offer feedback;
- Maintain close contact with educational establishment (École technique et professionnelle - USB);
- Participate in the student evaluation process.
Educational Establishment Responsibilities
- Inform students of the positions available and coordinate interviews where needed in order to ensure a mutually beneficial experience for both interns and employers alike;
- Ensure that employers provide experience relevant to the students’ program, as well as a safe and healthy environment that promotes learning;
- Visit the workplace at least once;
- Offer the necessary support to students and employers to ensure the success of the internship
