This program for beginner, intermediate and advanced learners helps participants acquire the level of French proficiency required for government positions and prepare for the Second Language Evaluation (SLE). The program is based on the Canada School of Public Service's French as a Second Language program, enhanced by our exclusive teaching materials, the À vous! collection.
Levels and topics
This program is designed to prepare learners for the Second Language Evaluation (SLE) and uses a variety of strategies, including real-life scenarios, personalized feedback based on SLE criteria, and interactive activities with French speakers in St. Boniface.
The program is designed for adults and includes 11 levels, from beginner to advanced. Each course covers topics related to everyday life or work in the public service. The courses are based on the Government of Canada's language training objectives, and are available in several formats:
Evening classes
This part-time group class is for beginners or those wishing to pursue their language learning at a more leisurely pace. It closely follows the Canada School of Public Service’s French as a Second Language Program.
Customized training
Our customized training is tailored to the needs of the individual or group, with a specific learning objective. It can be offered full-time or part-time, on campus or via videoconference. An agreement must be signed before the training can begin.
Maintaining language skills
Those wishing to maintain their French language skills or prepare to retake the SLE can receive support from the Continuing Education Division through individual or group training, offered on campus or via videoconference.
Instructors
Our instructors all have university degrees and extensive experience teaching adults. After they are hired, our instructors complete training on the experiential, communicative teaching approach, including a 33-hour practicum. They also receive specialized training on teaching civil servants, the French as a Second Language Program materials, and working in the federal public service.
The Continuing Education Division uses a quality control program that includes monitoring instructor performance, providing feedback on learners’ progress, and holding regular meetings with them.
A placement test is required for all new learners to determine their level. When registering, simply select “unknown level” on the registration form, if applicable.

The customized training schedule is tailored to the needs of the individual or group. For an assessment of these needs, please complete the French Courses for Civil Servants form and email it to the Continuing Education Division.
- Fall: August 24 to September 8, 2026
- Winter: December 3, 2026 to early January 6, 2027
- Spring: March 4 to April 6, 2027
To prepare an agreement, please complete the French Courses for Civil Servants form must be completed and email it to the Continuing Education Division.
Confirmation of registration
For evening classes, registration and course details will be confirmed by email or phone on the Thursday before the first class.
For customized training, course details will be confirmed after the agreement has been signed and the registration is confirmed.
Refunds
For evening classes, a partial refund (minus the cost of your handbook and a $43 administration fee) can be requested before the second class. A full refund will be issued if the course is cancelled or the schedule is changed by the Continuing Education Division.
