La saga d'Évelyne, un grand projet romanesque de Gabrielle Roy

RÉSUMÉ

La saga d’Éveline est un roman inédit auquel Gabrielle Roy a longtemps travaillé et qu’elle a laissé inachevé. De ce projet, il reste aujourd’hui un volumineux manuscrit conservé à la Bibliothèque nationale du Canada, parmi les archives personnelles de l’auteur. L’ensemble des manuscrits offre plusieurs versions d’un récit centré sur le personnage d’Éveline, déjà présent dans l’œuvre publiée, et inspiré par un épisode de l’histoire de la famille maternelle de Gabrielle Roy: la migration du Québec vers le Manitoba en 1881. Cet article se veut une présentation du manuscrit de La saga d’Éveline. Tout d’abord, nous présentons les personnages ainsi qu’un plan général de l’œuvre projetée en trois grandes parties. Nous décrivons ensuite les huit ensembles textuels que nous avons dégagés de la totalité des manuscrits. Puis, nous en proposons une datation qui situe l’élaboration de ce roman entre 1945 et 1965.

ABSTRACT

Although Gabrielle Roy worked for many years on La saga d’Éveline, she never finished the work and it remains unpublished to this day. Some lengthy manu-scripts in her personal archives at the National Library of Canada are all that remain of the novel. The manuscripts contain several versions of a story about Éveline, who al-ready appears in the published works. The story is based on an event from the maternal side of Roy’s family, involving the family’s migration to Manitoba from Québec in 1881. This article discusses the manuscript in question. The author introduces the various characters and the novel’s three-part division, with a description of eight text groupings from the extant work. It is also suggested that the novel was developed between 1945 and 1965.
