She taught numerous language and literacy courses with enthusiasm and the utmost professionalism, and supervised a number of students in pre-service, master’s and doctoral programs.

Her love of language, her expertise in linguistics and her close rapport with her university students were highly regarded, and she received the University of Manitoba’s Students’ Teacher Recognition Award in 2017. Gifted with a natural charm and charisma that will long be remembered...

Krystyna Baranowski first stepped foot on the Université de Saint-Boniface (USB) campus at the age of 18. She had no idea that she would spend a significant part of her life there. After more than 20 years of teaching at the Faculty of Education, Krystyna retired at the end of summer 2018.

Born in England to a Polish father and a British mother, Krystyna arrived in Canada as a young child at the age of three. Although she was raised in an English-speaking environment and never attended a French immersion school, a great love affair between her and the language of Molière began at a very early age.

After specializing in French literature at the University of Manitoba, she was offered an opportunity to go to France as an English assistant to improve her French.

Upon returning, she enrolled at USB to do a master’s degree that combined French studies, law and history at the Faculty of Education. Raymond Théberge, who was the dean at the time, wanted her to stay at USB and encouraged her to apply for a teaching position. She was hired and worked at USB for four years, before going on to pursue a PhD at McGill University, which she obtained in 2010.

At USB, Krystyna taught mainly master’s-level courses in French as a second language and literacy in the Faculty of Education, as well as undergraduate courses in didactics. In particular, she created a sociolinguistics course that is still part of the curriculum. After all these years, what stood out most for Krystyna was the joy of working with students.
