The Helen Mann Award from the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Social Work was presented to the Daycare Committee of the Association étudiante de l’Université de Saint-Boniface (AEUSB) on Thursday, September 27 as part of the Homecoming 2018 celebrations.

Every year since 1992, the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Social Work has awarded the Helen Mann Award to an individual in acknowledgement of his or her outstanding contribution to the profession or field of social work in Manitoba. This is the first time that the award has been given to a group.

“Over the past three years, dozens of students from the Social Work and Early Childhood Education programs have taken turns raising awareness of and advocating for an important cause in the community,” said David Alper, a professor of the Université de Saint-Boniface School of Social Work and faculty advisor for the AEUSB Daycare Committee. “The award is a wonderful acknowledgment of the great work they have accomplished.”

He added that the award is also a way of recognizing the community as a whole. “It was not only students, but also professors, organizations and members of the community who worked toward the future establishment of a daycare,” he explained. “If we want future generations to speak French in Manitoba, we absolutely must invest more in early childhood education.”
