Université de Saint-Boniface (USB) is proud to announce that l’École des sciences infirmières et des études de la santé (ESIES) has been granted provincial approvals for both its Diploma in Practical Nursing and Bachelor of Nursing programs, as well as two national accreditations: the first for the Bachelor or Nursing program, the second for the academic unit, the ESIES.

This national accreditation is awarded by the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN) for having achieved excellence in an evaluation based on numerous criteria, including leadership and governance, resources, teaching and learning environment, and scholarship.

In receiving this recognition, USB has become Manitoba’s first CASN-accredited post-secondary institution.

Provincial Approvals

Following separate evaluations that took place in Fall 2018, the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Manitoba (CLPNM) and the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM) each granted full five-year approvals for the Practical Nursing Diploma (January 2019) and the Bachelor of Nursing (March 2019), respectively.

Given the stringency of processes leading to these approvals, they represent an important recognition. “Both programs underwent separate evaluations by the province’s professional colleges in 2015–2016 and each obtained a conditional two-year approval (2016–2018),” recalls Peter Dorrington, Vice‑President (Academic and Research). “We are very proud of the important work undertaken following the conditional approvals to complete a significant revision of the Practical Nursing Diploma program and to reinforce the Bachelor of Nursing program. These efforts have paid off, and we can assert that students at ESIES benefit from outstanding teaching in a high-quality environment.”

This significant undertaking included the implementation of policies and administrative functions to better ensure the management of these two ESIES programs. The most important example of these is the establishment of the École headed by a dean position in June 2017.

National Accreditations

“L’École des sciences infirmières et des études de la santé offers robust programs, and we are fortunate to have competent, devoted and committed staff who are fully invested in our students’ success,” says Peter Dorrington. “It is important to note that USB chose to request the evaluation of the Bachelor of Nursing program and ESIES by CASN in order to obtain two distinct accreditations: one for the program, the other for the École. While the provincial approvals confirm that our programs meet already very rigorous basic requirements, CASN’s national accreditations granted in March 2019 are proof of their excellence, and we are tremendously proud of this achievement.”

The provincial professional colleges regularly evaluate nursing programs according to the approvals received to ensure that future graduates master the skills necessary to practice nursing as Registered Nurse (RN) or as Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) competently and in a way that ensures everyone’s safety.
