Five schools gathered on Thursday, December 12 at Université de Saint-Boniface (USB) for the second annual Francophone edition of the Manitoba High School Ethics Bowl, organized by the Manitoba Association for Rights and Liberties (MARL), the Canadian Commission for UNESCO, and USB. Collège régional Gabrielle-Roy, Collège Louis-Riel, École communautaire Gilbert-Rosset, École communautaire Réal-Bérard and Collège Béliveau were among the participants, all ready to broach a number of important issues affecting today’s society.

For USB, hosting the Ethics Bowl on its campus is a good fit. “It offers high school students the opportunity to set foot on our campus, some for the first time, and introduce them to philosophy, explains Antoine Cantin-Brault, USB professor and a facilitator for the event. It’s also a great stepping stone to developing other ethics-related activities.”

Fittingly, USB is always looking to contribute to the promotion of Francophone activities, and the Ethics Bowl is a great way to encourage Francophonie in a structured setting and give the participating teams a chance to use the language of Molière, as well as enrich USB’s programming initiatives.

Despite the competitive format of the Ethics Bowl, it is collaboration that remains at the forefront of the event, which is a near-debate in nature. “The first team starts off the discussion, and the second team must continue the discussion, details Antoine Cantin-Brault. The idea is to analyze the entire issue, and offer various solutions. Students must demonstrate knowledge, but also the ability to consider other people's opinions.”

For this second Francophone edition of the Ethics Bowl, the finals saw teams from Collège Louis-Riel and Collège Béliveau take the stage. Following a close race, the trophy was ultimately awarded to Collège Louis-Riel, for a second consecutive year.
